GMC Sierra Anti-lock Brake Pump Fix

Some GM vehicles will experience anti-lock brake failure. You still have your brakes but not with the anti-lock assistance. It can start with the warning light coming on or the pump continually running which may eventually lead to a dead battery. Maybe it went something like this.

You got into your GMC Sierra or possibly some other GM vehicle and turned the key and you heard something that sounded like a fan running underneath your vehicle. "What the hell is that?" Maybe it began with a dead battery like it did with me. One thing for sure is it's a pain in the neck. Here's my story.

My 2002 Fire Red GMC Sierra had a dead battery one morning.  When I hooked up the jumper cables to the battery the anti-lock brake pump was running nonstop continually. This is very strange I thought. At first I thought something was wrong with the recently rebuilt transmission. It was rebuilt at 90,000 miles. But further investigation proved to be the ABS pump. My first repair estimate was around $700.00. Forget it I said.
I'll just unplug the pump, I don’t really need it. I know how to drive without ABS. I’ve heard that these ABS pumps were built with junky inner parts and it is a very common problem with GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado trucks.

I found on eBay someone who rebuilds ABS pumps for about $120.00. Just remove the pump from the truck and send it to him. He will rebuild it better than new with a lifetime guarantee. I don’t really have the tools or the know how to remove it myself. Plus there is the hassle of boxing it up and shipping it off to be rebuilt. I guess you can conclude that I’m a great procrastinator.

It's been about a year now and I still have not had it repaired. No problem with my truck at all. Runs like a champ even if the brake light is always on. I just make sure I always release the brake. Oh well, maybe some day I’ll get it fixed, or maybe not. It doesn’t really matter much to me.

I still love my GMC truck! The longest lasting most dependable truck on the road.

Update: Okay, I wasn't being totally honest. It did bother me; that brake light I mean! A constant reminder of inadequacy. My truck was less than it could be. My truck was less than it should be. This was unacceptable to me. It was unfair to my truck. It was unfair to me. It was unfair to GMC enthusiast everywhere! That brake light was always shining at me reminding me that something was out of sync. I couldn't take it any longer. I had to do something and I had to do it now.

Yes, I finally did it. I found that guy on eBay who rebuilds ABS pumps. He lowered his price to $110.00. He was the same guy as I mentioned before and he lowered his price $10.00. But now they are even cheaper ($50.00-$60.00). Anyway, it was still a big savings over replacing the ABS pump which can cost from $700.00 - $1000.00.

Take advantage of the savings  here… I sent the pump to him and he rebuilt it better than original. It took less than a week and I had it installed by a local reputable service shop. The whole repair cost me about $300.00. Much better than the outrageous $700.00 estimate at my first inquiry. And, if you are mechanically inclined you can do it yourself and save all the labor cost.  I love my GMC Sierra truck!
